Bolzano, the largest town in South Tyrol and the capital of the province, is just a stone’s throw away and easily accessible. Therefore, we recommend to take the bus or train to the city centre and start your sightseeing tour there.

Enjoy a latte macchiato on Piazza Walther square, the largest and most famous square in Bolzano, while taking in the view of the Cathedral of Maria Assunta, mostly built in the late Gothic style. The famous Lauben arcades, with their long-established boutiques, invite you to browse and shop. At the fruit and vegetable market, vendors offer fresh seasonal fruit, vegetables and South Tyrolean specialties.

As the capital, Bolzano is also the cultural and commercial centre. Despite the commercial activities Bolzano is also a green city with green oases and promenades with a beautiful flora. Thanks to its excellent connections, Bolzano is an attractive destination for everyone.

Bolzano is the shopping paradise and cultural meeting place. The provincial capital offers visitors a multitude of events and sights, in summer and in winter.

Promenades

Escape the daily grind and let your mind and body relax: the city’s parks and promenades invite you to do just that. The promenade Lungotalvera, not far from the historic city centre, offer wide lawns, playgrounds and sports fields, and are ideal for jogging and cycling. For walks with views over Bolzano, the Guncina and San Osvaldo promenades are perfect.

Ötzi at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology

Ötzi the ice man is one of the oldest mummies in the world, estimated to be around 5,000 years old. The shepherd was found in 1991 by hikers on Giogo di Tisa. It was perfectly preserved including its complete set of clothing and many pieces of equipment. The glacier mummy can be viewed at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology.

Museum of Nature South Tyrol

The Museum of Nature engages with the landscape and natural history of the province. The stroll through the exhibition is like a walk through time and offers visitors active engagement with the museum. The highlight is the coral aquarium with a capacity of 9,000 litres of water.

MMM Firmian

Perched on porphyry rocks south of Bolzano, the extensive castle complex of Sigmundskron Castle is one of the oldest in South Tyrol. Since 2006, it houses the Messner Mountain Museum Firmian, which explores humanity’s relationship with the mountains and serves as the centerpiece of the six-part museum network established by mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner.

Museion

The Museion, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, displays around 4,500 works as well as temporary exhibitions by world-renowned contemporary artists. The building itself is also a work of art: its silvery-grey facade, with its seamless flow between inside and out, symbolizes the connection between the art of South Tyrol’s three linguistic groups.
